With an estimated 44% of all mobile phones sitting around unused, many handset and service providers are working to keep gear from landing in landfills. On Thursday, Sprint announced an initiative to, by 2017, recycle or reuse 90% of all mobile phones compared with annual wireless device sales.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- The City of Binghamton is doing what it can to go green, including a new recycling program announced by Mayor Matt Ryan.
The City's Recycling Enhancement Program will add more than 40 new recycling bins in parts of the city with the greatest need. The project will also engage young people in an effort to get the word out through a public service announcement and a door-to-door recycling campaign.

CHICAGO (AP) _ State officials say they're awarding about $760,000 in grants for 17 recycling projects in northeastern Illinois.
The money will go communities, universities and businesses.
The funding is called the Illinois Recycling Grant Program. The goal is to divert recyclable commodities form Illinois landfills and expand recycling collection.
